Braces Cost Calculator
Orthodontic treatment is a big single quote, but most practices let you pay it in instalments, and dental insurance may cover part of it. This calculator turns your quote into a monthly payment. It subtracts your insurance benefit and down payment, spreads the rest over the months you choose (with or without interest), and shows your total out-of-pocket cost. Prices differ widely between practices and treatment types, so always work from a written quote.
How to use the braces cost calculator
- Enter the total from your orthodontist’s written quote.
- Enter the insurance benefit you expect (check the lifetime orthodontic maximum on your policy) and any down payment.
- Choose the number of months and the interest rate, if any, and read the monthly payment.
Formula
Amount owed = quote − insurance benefit. Financed = amount owed − down payment. At 0% interest, monthly payment = financed ÷ months. With interest, payment = L × i ÷ (1 − (1 + i)−n) as for any loan.
Worked examples
An interest-free plan
A $5,500 quote with $1,500 insurance and a $500 down payment leaves $3,500 to finance. Over 24 months at 0% that is $145.83 a month, and the total out of pocket is $4,000.
Comparing plans
Try 18, 24 and 36 months to see how the payment changes and whether interest applies.
Understanding orthodontic costs
What affects the price
- Type of treatment: metal braces, ceramic braces, lingual braces and clear aligners are priced differently.
- Length of treatment: more complex cases take longer.
- The practice and location.
- What is included: initial records, adjustments, retainers and follow-ups.
Questions to ask before you commit
- What exactly does the quote include?
- Is there an interest-free payment plan, and what is the down payment?
- What happens if treatment takes longer than planned?
- How much does a replacement retainer cost?
Ways to spread or reduce the cost
Check your insurance’s orthodontic benefit and lifetime maximum. Health savings accounts and flexible spending accounts (where available) let you pay with pre-tax money. Some dental schools offer lower-cost treatment supervised by qualified staff. Always compare more than one written quote.
This calculator gives a payment estimate. It cannot recommend treatment, and it is not a substitute for advice from an orthodontist.
Practice problems
Try these yourself first, then check your answer. The answers come from the calculator above.
- A $6,200 quote, $2,000 insurance, $700 down, 18 months at 0%. What is the monthly payment?
Show answer
Monthly payment: $194.44 · You owe after insurance: $4,200.00
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming insurance pays a percentage. Many plans have a fixed lifetime maximum for orthodontics.
- Not asking about extras such as retainers, records and missed-appointment fees.
- Choosing the longest plan without checking for interest or fees.
