Mean, Median and Mode Quiz – free practice

Mean, median, mode and range are the first tools of statistics. They summarise a list of numbers with a single value or a measure of spread. This quiz gives you a new list every time and asks for one of the four, so you get lots of practice picking and applying the right method.

What this quiz covers

  • Finding the mean of a data set
  • Finding the median from an unsorted list
  • Identifying the mode
  • Calculating the range
  • Sorting values before choosing the middle
  • Recognising when a data set has repeated values

How to prepare

For the median, always sort first. For the mean, add everything and divide by the count. The mode is the value that appears most often. The range is largest minus smallest. Read more in the mean, median and mode guide.

Sample questions with answers

These five questions show the style. Your quiz above will have different numbers each time.

  1. Find the mean of 15, 6, 10, 11, 2, 10.
    Show answer

    9. Sum = 54; 54 ÷ 6 = 9.

  2. Find the median of 27, 18, 9, 24, 16.
    Show answer

    18. Sorted: 9, 16, 18, 24, 27. The middle value is 18.

  3. Find the mode of 2, 3, 2, 2, 5, 7, 6.
    Show answer

    2. 2 appears most often (3 times).

  4. Find the range of 40, 2, 12, 23, 24.
    Show answer

    38. Range = largest − smallest = 40 − 2 = 38.

  5. Find the mean of 9, 4, 9, 2.
    Show answer

    6. Sum = 24; 24 ÷ 4 = 6.
