Algebra 1 Quiz – free practice

Algebra 1 is where symbols take over from arithmetic. Students solve equations, graph lines, work with functions and start factoring polynomials. This quiz samples all of those skills, and every question comes with a worked explanation so you can see the method, not just the answer.

What this quiz covers

  • Solving linear equations, including fractions
  • Finding slope and y-intercept
  • Solving a system by adding equations
  • Evaluating functions with f(x) notation
  • Expanding a product of two binomials
  • Factoring simple quadratics and using exponent rules

How to prepare

Always do the same thing to both sides of an equation. For factoring x² + bx + c, look for two numbers that multiply to c and add to b. For systems, adding or subtracting the equations often eliminates a variable in one step. Check your answer by substituting it back.

Sample questions with answers

These five questions show the style. Your quiz above will have different numbers each time.

  1. Solve for x: 4x + 6 = 2x + 16
    Show answer

    5. Subtract 2x from both sides: 2x + 6 = 16. Then x = (16 − 6) ÷ 2 = 5.

  2. Solve for x: x/2 + 2 = 4
    Show answer

    4. Subtract 2: x/2 = 2. Multiply by 2: x = 4.

  3. Find the slope of the line through (0, -2) and (3, 10).
    Show answer

    4. slope = (y₂ − y₁) ÷ (x₂ − x₁) = (10 − -2) ÷ (3 − 0) = 4.

  4. A line has slope 6 and passes through (4, 21). What is its y-intercept?
    Show answer

    -3. y = 6x + b, so b = 21 − 6 × 4 = -3.

  5. Solve the system: x + y = 9 and x − y = -1. What is x?
    Show answer

    4. Add the equations: 2x = 8, so x = 4 (and y = 5).
