Converting Fractions, Decimals and Percents

Fractions, decimals and percents are three ways of writing the same quantity. Half can be 1/2, 0.5 or 50%. Being able to switch between them quickly makes shopping, cooking, grades and data much easier. This guide gives you a clear method for each direction.
Fraction to decimal
Divide the numerator by the denominator. 3/8 = 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375, and 7/20 = 0.35. If the division never ends, the decimal repeats: 1/3 = 0.333…, written 0.3̅.
Decimal to fraction
Read the place value. 0.625 is 625 thousandths, so 625/1000. Divide top and bottom by the GCF (125): 5/8. Use the decimal to fraction calculator to check longer ones.
Percent to decimal and back
A percent means “out of 100”, so divide by 100 to get a decimal: 45% = 0.45. Multiply by 100 to go back: 0.07 = 7%. Moving the decimal point two places is all it takes.
Fraction to percent
Convert to a decimal, then multiply by 100. 3/5 = 0.6 = 60%. Or make the denominator 100: 3/5 = 60/100 = 60%.
Repeating decimals to fractions
Let x = 0.777…, so 10x = 7.777…. Subtract: 9x = 7, so x = 7/9. For 0.363636…, multiply by 100 and subtract: 99x = 36, so x = 36/99 = 4/11. A repeating block of n digits goes over n nines.
